NFL Update!
A big rule change happened yesterday that will change the NFL playoffs forever. The old overtime rule was as follows, after regulation both team captains would meet at midfield for a coin toss. The road teams captain would call heads or tails and the winner of the toss would always choose to have the ball first because the rule was that the first team to score won the game. That 50/50 chance gave the team that won the coin toss a huge advantage. Because all they need to do was move the ball around forty yards after the kickoff into field goal range and kick the winning field goal.
Most people felt like this rule was really unfair because only one teams offense would get to touch the ball. That it was not fair that the game could end on a field goal, and you have to give each team a fair chance. But some argued that the defensive players get paid as well and it is their job to go out and stop the opposing offense. While that is true I think that a field goal is too easy to obtain when the league is now a offensive passing league. The rules are slanted towards the offense because wide receivers have can not be touched at all after five yards and it is way to easy to get pass interference penalties.
So yesterday the NFL changed the rule at the owners meetings with a vote of 28 to 4. The new rule states as follows the first team with the ball can end the game by scoring a touchdown but if they are stopped to just a field goal then the other team can come down and tie the game up again with a field goal or win the game by scoring a touchdown. Also if the first team turns the ball over the second team can win the game by scoring just a field goal, plus if the first team only kicks a field goal but then holds the other team to 0 points then they win the game. Lastly if the team that looses the coin toss can onside kick it and if they recover it they can come down and kick a field goal to win and thusly if they do not recover the onside kick the other team can win the game with a field goal as well.
I believe this new rule is better than the old rule but still has some holes. For example I think that no field goals should be allowed and both teams should get a possession to try and score a touchdown. Then the process should continue till one team give sup a touchdown and then allows one to the other team. Until next time have a great night!
